Plumbing across Whatcom County
Water sources vary widely. Bellingham draws from Lake Whatcom, which supplies more than 100,000 residents, about half the county's population, with soft water (21.8 mg/L). Ferndale pumps from three wells and has treated all of its water with reverse osmosis since July 2025. Blaine's nine deep wells run moderately hard, typically 50 to 95 mg/L, and also supply Birch Bay Water and Sewer District. Thousands of rural residents rely on private wells.
The Sumas-Blaine aquifer, which extends from northern Whatcom County into British Columbia, is one of the most severely contaminated aquifers in Washington for nitrate; Ecology's 2009 to 2016 monitoring found about one in four wells still failing the nitrate standard. Septic systems must be evaluated every three years if they are conventional gravity systems and every year for all other types, and a current Report of System Status must be on file before a sale.
Winter cold arrives on Fraser Outflow winds from British Columbia. On January 12, 2024, Bellingham International Airport set a daily record low of 3 degrees as gusts topped 50 mph in northwest Whatcom County. Floods matter too: in December 2025 the Nooksack crested just below major flood stage at Ferndale, flooding low spots east of downtown. About 40% of the county's homes were built before 1980.

Local know-how
Plumbing in Whatcom County: what to know.
Test private wells for nitrate
Ecology's monitoring found about one in four sampled wells in the Sumas-Blaine aquifer over the nitrate standard, and private wells are not regularly monitored. Test yours on a schedule. We handle the plumbing side: pressure tanks, water heaters and supply lines.
Freeze-proof before outflow season
Fraser Outflow winds can drive temperatures into single digits, as they did in January 2024. Insulate crawlspace and exterior-wall pipes, cover foundation vents during cold snaps, and disconnect hoses. Know your main shutoff; if a pipe bursts, call our 24/7 line.
Check pipes in pre-1980 homes
About 40% of Whatcom County homes were built before 1980, when galvanized supply pipe and cast-iron drains were common. Rusty water, weak pressure and slow drains are signs of age. We camera-inspect drain lines and quote repiping at a flat rate.
