Plumbing in Shoreline

Shoreline began with the 1890 plat of Richmond Beach on Puget Sound, but its big growth came early: from 1950 to 1957 it was the fastest-growing area in the Seattle metro, with a 64% population increase. It stayed unincorporated King County until 1995. That 1950s boom still shows in the housing stock, and homes of that era often have galvanized supply pipe and cast-iron drains.

Utilities split along I-5. Seattle Public Utilities supplies water generally west of the freeway, while North City Water District, founded in 1931 and buying its water from SPU, serves about 29,000 residents in east Shoreline and part of Lake Forest Park. The City of Shoreline's Wastewater Utility handles sewer everywhere except the Highlands, a gated community that manages its own utilities.

Local know-how

What's hard on plumbing in Shoreline.

Replace aging galvanized supply lines

More than a third of Shoreline homes were built before 1960, when galvanized steel supply pipe was common. As it corrodes inside, it can cut water pressure and discolor water. Beaver's replaces it with PEX or copper for an upfront, flat-rate price.

Side sewer work needs a permit

Shoreline's Wastewater Utility requires a permit and inspections for all work on the sanitary sewer system, side sewers included. In most cases the utility can locate your side sewer from its as-built records. Beaver's camera-inspects the line so the repair is scoped right.

Know which water utility to call

For a main break or meter problem, call Seattle Public Utilities' 24-hour line, (206) 386-1800, west of I-5, or North City Water District, (206) 362-8100, east of it. For a burst pipe inside the house, Beaver's emergency line answers 24/7.

Good questions

Shoreline plumbing FAQ.

Don't see your question? Call or text (425) 845-3535. A real person answers, 24/7.

Is Shoreline's water hard?

No. Shoreline gets Seattle's regional mountain supply, delivered by Seattle Public Utilities west of I-5 and North City Water District east of it. SPU says areas north of Green Lake usually get South Fork Tolt water, and the Tolt supply measured 24.8 mg/L of hardness in late 2025, soft on the USGS scale. Because the supply is so soft, SPU adds calcium oxide and sodium carbonate to limit corrosion of household plumbing.

Are there lead water pipes in Shoreline?

Not in North City's system: the district confirmed in 2023 and 2024 that it has no lead pipes, including customer-side service lines. Seattle Public Utilities, which serves the west side, reports no known lead service lines but says a small number of homes and businesses may have lead connections. Older faucets and household plumbing can still contribute lead; Beaver's installs lead-free fixtures and repipes older homes.
