Plumbing in Kenmore

Kenmore sits on the north shore of Lake Washington at the mouth of the Sammamish River, on rolling glacial-till hills. Its closeness to Seattle made it an early target for postwar housing, and development followed the suburban model for decades; Upper Moorlands, first built on in 1938 and 1939, stayed rural until the mid-1950s for lack of a good water system. The city itself did not incorporate until 1998.

Northshore Utility District provides both water and sewer across Kenmore and is headquartered in the city. It serves more than 87,000 people through about 23,000 connections and 286 miles of water mains. It reported losing only 4.7% of the water it bought in 2025, well below the roughly 14% national average it cites, and it keeps replacing aging pipes prone to leaks or breaks.

Local know-how

What's hard on plumbing in Kenmore.

Act on a leak notice

Northshore's Leak Notification Program alerts customers when a meter read points to a possible leak. If you get one, check toilets and irrigation first; if the source stays hidden, Beaver's leak detection can find it, including leaks under a slab.

Pre-1985 copper and lead solder

Northshore treats homes built or re-plumbed with copper pipe and lead-based solder before 1985 as its high-risk group for lead testing. It advises flushing the tap after water sits and choosing lead-free fixtures; Beaver's installs lead-free faucets and repipes older systems.

Keep backflow test reminders coming

Northshore's cross-connection program covers home irrigation, fire sprinklers, boiler systems, pools, hot tubs and landscape ponds. If you have a backflow assembly, the district sends an annual test reminder, so keep your mailing and email details current with the district.

Good questions

Who provides water and sewer service in Kenmore?

Northshore Utility District, a special-purpose district based in Kenmore, provides both. It serves all of Kenmore plus parts of Bothell, Lake Forest Park, Kirkland and Woodinville. Its water comes from Seattle Public Utilities; in 2025 it was all Tolt River water, which is soft, testing 24.8 mg/L hardness in SPU's late-2025 analysis. Call the district about main breaks and billing, and Beaver's for problems inside your home.

Do older Kenmore homes have galvanized pipes?

Some may. Kenmore was an early postwar suburb: Inglewood was first platted in 1953 and Uplake Terrace began the same year, and Census data show about 12% of homes were built before 1960, when galvanized steel supply pipe was common. Homes built before the mid-1970s often have cast-iron drains as well. Beaver's can inspect both and quote a flat-rate PEX or copper repipe or drain repair.
