Plumbing in Ferndale

Ferndale bought Nooksack River water through Whatcom County PUD No. 1 until December 2011, when it switched to its own wells. The well water ran harder than most people liked, as the mayor acknowledged in 2025, so the city added reverse osmosis in 2014 and finished a plant upgrade that has run on full reverse osmosis since July 2025, remineralizing the water to a hardness target of 50 to 70 mg/L.

The Nooksack River runs through town, and downtown is built largely on river alluvium. In December 2025 the river crested at about 22 feet at Ferndale, just below major flood stage; the city avoided the worst, but low-lying spots east of downtown, including VanderYacht Park and the Griffintown area, flooded. Ferndale's housing is young: 47% of its homes were built in 2000 or later.

Local know-how

What's hard on plumbing in Ferndale.

Clean out hard-water scale

Before full reverse osmosis arrived in July 2025, Ferndale's well water was noticeably harder. Scale from those years can linger in water heaters, aerators and showerheads. Flush the tank, soak aerators in vinegar, and call us if the heater rumbles or fixtures stay clogged.

Flood-proof low-lying homes

Low ground east of downtown flooded when the Nooksack crested in December 2025. If your home sits low, test the sump pump each fall, raise the water heater and furnace off the floor, and ask us about a backwater valve on the sewer line.

Plan the water heater swap

Nearly half of Ferndale's homes were built in 2000 or later, and tank water heaters typically last 8 to 12 years. If yours is original to the house, replace it on your schedule, not after a leak. We install tank and tankless, gas or electric.

Good questions

Ferndale plumbing FAQ.

Don't see your question? Call or text (425) 845-3535. A real person answers, 24/7.

Is Ferndale's water still hard?

Less than it was. Ferndale's wells produce harder water than the Nooksack River supply the city used before 2011, which drew complaints. The city added reverse osmosis in 2014, and since July 2025 all of its water goes through reverse osmosis, then is remineralized to a hardness target of 50 to 70 mg/L, which is soft to moderately hard.

Where does Ferndale's tap water come from?

Three city wells. Two draw from the Vashon-Olympia aquifer and one from the deeper Possession-Whidbey aquifer, and the water is softened and chlorinated at the city's treatment plant. Design is underway on Douglas Well #2 in the deep aquifer, and the city's 2025 report says five quarterly PFAS tests found no PFAS.
