Plumbing in Woodinville

Woodinville Water District provides water within the city and buys all of it from Seattle, mostly from the South Fork Tolt River watershed with occasional Cedar River water. Tolt water is soft, about 1.4 grains per gallon (roughly 24 mg/L). The district, formed in 1959, now runs more than 295 miles of main, eight steel reservoirs and 43 pressure reducing stations across about 30 square miles.

Woodinville incorporated in 1993 and covers about 5.6 square miles, with roughly 130 wineries and tasting rooms. Sewer is not universal: the city says only a portion of Woodinville receives sewer service from the district, which by law can't serve sewer outside the Urban Growth Area. District-wide, it has about 14,754 water customers but just over 3,468 sewer customers.

Local know-how

What's hard on plumbing in Woodinville.

Septic care where sewer ends

Homes without sewer rely on septic systems; the city advises a professional inspection every 1 to 3 years, and most tanks need pumping every 3 to 5. Keep grease and wipes out between visits; we clear slow drains and camera-inspect the line.

Pre-1985 plumbing and lead

Woodinville Water District says its source water has no detectable lead, but homes built before 1985 especially carry some risk from water that sits in pipes for hours. Run the tap 2 minutes before drinking; we replace older fixtures and piping.

Heaters in 2000s-built homes

About 44% of Woodinville homes were built in 2000 or later, so many original tank water heaters are at or past the typical 8 to 12 year mark. Soft Tolt water limits scale, but tanks still wear out; we replace tank and tankless units.

Good questions

Woodinville plumbing FAQ.

Don't see your question? Call or text (425) 845-3535. A real person answers, 24/7.

Is Woodinville's water hard?

No. Woodinville Water District buys all of its water from Seattle, mostly from the Tolt River watershed, and Tolt water measures about 1.4 grains per gallon (roughly 24 mg/L). That is soft on the USGS scale, so most homes don't need a softener, and hard-water scale is rarely what shortens a water heater's life here.

Is my Woodinville home on sewer or septic?

It depends on the property. The city says only a portion of Woodinville receives sewer from Woodinville Water District, which cannot serve sewer outside the Urban Growth Area. A sewer charge on your utility bill means you're connected; if there's none, you likely have a septic tank. Either way, we clear drains and can camera-inspect the line to see where it runs.
