Plumbing across Thurston County
Thurston County runs on groundwater: the county says aquifers supply drinking water for about 90% of residents. Olympia draws most of its supply from the McAllister Wellfield, Lacey pumps from wells tapping three aquifers, and rural homes rely on small public systems or their own wells. The county warns that poorly maintained septic systems and sewer lines can leak bacteria and nutrients into groundwater, which is why drain and septic care matters here.
Septic systems are common here. The county's septic management plan counts an estimated 53,000 of them, and Thurston County Environmental Health permits septic systems countywide, even inside Olympia's city limits. When a home with septic is sold, the county's Time of Transfer process requires the system to be pumped and inspected by a county-certified septic professional before the application is submitted.
Weather is the other local factor. The county calls floods its costliest natural hazard, from rivers such as the Nisqually, Chehalis, Deschutes, Skookumchuck and Black, and from groundwater, tides and urban runoff; in high groundwater areas, surfacing water can pond for long stretches. Winters bite harder than around Seattle, too: NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals show 77 nights a year at or below freezing at Olympia's airport, versus 25 at Sea-Tac.

Local know-how
Plumbing in Thurston County: what to know.
Prepare pipes for hard freezes
Olympia's airport averages 77 nights a year at or below 32°F and 7 at or below 20°F (NOAA 1991 to 2020). Insulate crawlspace lines and well pump houses; Beaver's handles burst pipe repairs 24/7.
Sump pumps in high groundwater
Thurston County maps high groundwater hazard areas where surfacing water can pond for long periods. Test sump pumps before winter storms, and have Beaver's check for leaks and damaged pipe in crawlspaces that flood.
Septic homes: watch the drains
With an estimated 53,000 septic systems countywide, slow drains or gurgling can point to trouble in the line or tank. Beaver's clears and camera-inspects the drain line to the tank; pumping and inspections go to a county-certified septic professional.

Does my Thurston County septic system need an operational certificate?
Only some do. The county requires a renewable Operational Certificate for certain system types and for systems in the Henderson and Nisqually Reach marine recovery areas; its septic plan estimates 39,000 of the county's roughly 53,000 systems do not need one. Renewal takes an inspection by a certified septic professional or a certified homeowner, and the tank is pumped only when sludge and scum levels call for it.
Who oversees private wells and small water systems in Thurston County?
It depends on size. Group A systems, with 15 or more connections, are regulated by the Washington State Department of Health, with the county handling well siting and sanitary surveys for small ones. Group B systems of 3 to 14 connections are regulated by Thurston County Environmental Health, and a single-family well is a non-public well. Any new well site needs a county inspection before drilling.
