Plumbing across King County
Seattle Public Utilities supplies drinking water to 1.6 million people in the region, directly and through wholesale customers such as the Cascade Water Alliance (Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Issaquah, Tukwila, Sammamish Plateau Water and Skyway Water and Sewer District), Northshore Utility District, Woodinville Water District and the cities of Bothell and Duvall. That Cedar and Tolt water is soft. Redmond is the local exception, pumping about 40 percent of its supply from wells at about 90 mg/L.
King County has over 85,000 septic systems, including nearly 40,000 in urban areas, many past their intended life span. Public Health Seattle & King County requires conventional gravity systems to be inspected every 3 years and pressure distribution, mound, sand filter and other advanced systems every 6 months, by a certified pumper or maintainer. Private well owners are responsible for monitoring their own water quality.
The rivers of the Snoqualmie-Skykomish watershed are the most flood-prone in King County. The lower Snoqualmie meanders north past Fall City, Carnation and Duvall, and the county calls flooding in the watershed common and expects it to increase with climate change. Near Lake Washington winters are milder: NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Seattle's Sand Point station show about 25 freezing nights a year, against about 60 in Monroe.

Local know-how
Plumbing in King County: what to know.
Snoqualmie Valley flood prep
In flood-prone parts of Duvall and Carnation, FEMA suggests moving furnaces and other HVAC equipment to a higher floor, raising water heaters off the ground floor or switching to tankless, and setting heat pumps at least a foot above flood level. We install all three.
Septic-friendly water habits
Public Health Seattle & King County advises fixing leaky fixtures, running full dishwasher and laundry loads, spreading laundry over several days and never draining hot tubs into a septic system. Our leak detection and repair takes care of the first one.
Older homes, older pipes
Nearly half of King County homes, 46 percent, were built before 1980, and 23 percent before 1960. Homes that old may still have galvanized supply lines or cast-iron drains; a camera inspection and a repiping quote show where yours stand.

Who issues plumbing permits in King County?
It depends on the address. Public Health Seattle & King County issues plumbing and gas piping permits in Seattle, Clyde Hill and unincorporated King County. In any other King County city, including Bellevue, Kirkland and Redmond, permits come from that city's building department. If you're unsure which applies, the King County Parcel Viewer shows your jurisdiction.
Is tap water hard in King County?
Mostly no. Seattle Public Utilities water from the Cedar and Tolt rivers measured about 1.5 grains per gallon (roughly 26 mg/L) in May 2026, soft on the USGS scale, and it reaches Seattle and, through local utilities, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Duvall and the Eastside. Redmond's well water, about 90 mg/L, is moderately hard, and private well owners must monitor their own water quality.
